Since Roentgen's discovery of x-rays in 1895, the radiographs that are produced have remained almost universally flat, monochrome shadow graphs.

Kromek's advanced imaging technology is about to change this for good. Because of the energy selectivity of the CdTe family of materials, it is possible to make multispectral detectors from them.

Kromek's production techniques are set to make the material universally available such that spectral imaging detectors made from them will become an automatic mainstream choice for many applications.

2D Imaging

In simple situations imaging an object in two dimensions can provide sufficient information. Where the object and its presentation are well defined, templates can be developed to identify objects which meet particular criteria. This technique can be applied in areas from on line process control to medical imaging. Kromek brings added dimensions to this technique. The sensitivity of Kromek's detectors allows these images to be produced with hitherto unheard of contrast. This allows the identification of much more subtle changes or defects. The materials identification provided by spectral x ray analysis then allows the root cause of these changes or defects to be clearly understood.

3D Imaging

Most objects which are inspected using x-rays are three dimensional in nature. However, traditional radiographs contain little or no spatial information. Kromek has addressed this situation by introducing into its images the powerful human depth cue known as monocular movement parallax.

This technology termed x-ray animation (XRA™) allows the x-ray image to be rotated in three dimensional space.

This can be done on a standard monitor screen without the need for any specialist viewing equipment or glasses. This ability to see around objects has significant implications concerning the interpretation of complex radiograph images which can be encountered across all market sectors.

Kromek's advanced imaging architecture involves the use of a single x-ray source from which a series of identical beams are derived. Each beam is detected by one of Kromek's energy selective detectors thus enabling an image data set to be constructed consisting for the first time ever of three-dimensional spatial information as well as multi-spectral detail.

This unique data set has never been produced in an x-ray imaging system previously. It is possible to identify the constituent material, the position and the volume of all objects within the radiograph. This interpretation of complex images, either automatically or with human intervention, is greatly improved as a result.

Kromek has truly brought x-ray imaging squarely into the 21st Century.
