The Institute of Physics has recognised Kromek as part of their 2016 Business Innovation Awards for the development of wireless handheld radiation detectors, which can produce maps of radiation levels across cities
Kromek has been awarded one of five Innovation Awards from the Institute of Physics, with representatives from the company receiving their award at a parliamentary reception in London on 18 October.
The Innovation Awards are presented to businesses for bringing new physics-based products, processes or services to market, which have had a transformative effect resulting in increased turnover, profitability and jobs.
Kromek’s award is in recognition of the development of their handheld, wireless radiation detectors, which can be carried by police officers and community first responders as they travel.
The wireless detectors can coordinate their readings to produce a map of radiation levels in a city and in turn improve the ability of security services to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism.
To date, Kromek has sold 10,000 units to DARPA, an agency of the US Department of Defense, in support of its SIGMA programme, under which Kromek has been awarded over $11 million in contracted revenues.
The award was presented to the company at a parliamentary reception at Westminster, attended by a selection of MPs, peers, policymakers, business leaders and leading physicists in the field.
President of the IOP Professor Roy Sambles offered his congratulations to the winners, and commended them on their fantastic achievements. “This year’s winners all provide excellent examples of the way in which physics can improve and protect lives while also forming an invaluable part of the UK economy.
“Physics and physicists have vital roles to play in solving many of the challenges that the UK faces today.
“Together they lead to the development of innovative technologies that boost productivity and drive economic growth, provide advances in security and communications, improvements in energy production and use, and underpin healthcare technology.”
CEO of Kromek Arnab Basu MBE said of winning the award: “It is a great honour to receive this award, which is recognition of the outstanding team at Kromek, who continue to produce world-class innovative products for the global nuclear security markets.”
